There is no free public education in Haiti. This gift pays one student’s tuition for a year - something they absolutely would not get otherwise - it gives the child a uniform, a backpack and a warm meal every day. This daily meal in some cases allows parents to keep their children - they don’t have to take them to an orphanage or give them up to be restaveks (child slaves) because they can’t feed them. We have met these children and listened to the thank yous from their parents…it is life changing.
This year we have had an influx of refugee children whose families have fled the violence in Port au Prince and settled near Emmanuel, so the need has never been greater.
